St. Petersburg State University has taken the third place in the QS University Rankings: Emerging Europe and Central Asia (EECA) made by the British company Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) and published on 14 June 2016. The position in the rankings is determined by the academic reputation of the university, its employer reputation, number of papers per faculty in the last 5 years calculated using the data from Elsevier’s Scopus as well as the Web Impact Factor based on the Webometrics ranking. Among the Russian universities that have made it into the QS rankings, SPbU ranks second for academic reputation and the Web Impact Factor.

At the meeting of SPbU Academic Council held on September 28, Orhan Pamuk, a prominent contemporary Turkish writer and Nobel laureate (Literature, 2006), was awarded SPbU honorary doctorate for his contribution to the promotion of Russian-Turkish cultural ties.
On September 2, a ceremony to open Russian Research Center, set up as part of Renmin University of China (PUC) by PUC and SPbU, took place in Beijing. The ceremony was attended by Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation Olga Golodets, Vice Premier of the People’s Republic of China Liu Yandong and SPbU Rector Prof. Nikolay Kropachev.
A monument to the prominent historian, ethnologist, archeologist, Orientalist, writer and translator was opened at SPbU on October 1, the day of Lev Gumilyov’s birth, thus becoming the first monument to Lev Gumilyov in St. Petersburg.
August 27-29, 2015 the administration of the European Association for Chinese Studies held a meeting at Saint Petersburg State University. The choice of venue is explained by the forthcoming 21 EACS Conference to be held in 2016 in Saint Petersburg by SPbU, RAS Institute of Oriental Manuscripts and the Hermitage.
ETAGI Loft Project opened exhibition “Chinese Contemporary Art. Liberation of Present from Past.” It is the first time such a large-scale exhibition is organized in Russia. It became part of a joint educational-art project between SPbU and Peking University supported by the Headquarters of Confucius Institutes. Thirty-seven artists from Bejing, Taipei, Tianjin, Guangzhou, Changsha and Shenyang showed their works to Saint Petersburg art lovers. Visitors can see Chinese contemporary art objects made in ink, pen and acrylic paint, as well as contemporary sculpture, video art, collage and performance in one of the ETAGI exhibition areas.
September 4-10, 2015 SPbU students actively participated in the organization and running of a business forum for Lebanon businessmen in Saint Petersburg and other cities. The help of volunteers was highly estimated by the Russian-Arab Business Council and the Lebanese business elite representatives.
August 25-29, 2015 translators A. Nikitina and T. Kornilieva, assistants at the SPbU Department of Chinese philology, got the invitation from the Chinese Writers Association and took part in the Chinese literature translation and publishing workshop held in Beijing.
In summer, a literally historical event happened at SPbU: it started to admit candidates to a new bachelor’s degree program, “Islamic Studies”. On August 31, a meeting between professors and first-year students was organized at the Faculty of Asian and African Studies.

May 15, 2015, the Faculty of Oriental Studies held its annual festival of the Arabic language and culture. All departments of the Faculty were invited to the celebration promoted by the festive posters prepared by the sophomores.
L. Dashnyam and D. Batbayar, Mongolian writers, poets, playwrights and members of the Mongolian Union of Writers visited St. Petersburg May 12-14, 2015. May 13, D. Batbayar gave a lecture at the SPbU Department of Mongolian and Tibetan Studies titled “Peculiarities of modern nomad mentality” where he told about a unique livestock rearing method and its link with music. L. Dashnyam delivered lecture “Modern socio-political state of Mongolia” focusing attention on educational and cultural problems. The guests prepared a gift for the Department, their co-authored 6-volume anthology of Mongolian stories and tales. Prof. Uspensky, head of the Department of Mongolian and Tibetan Studies, has in turn presented the guests multi-authored monograph “Modernism in Asian and African Literature” and other recent SPbU publications. Then followed a tea party and a discussion in Mongolian between the guests and the professors, students and graduates of the Department.
April 25-26, 2015 the Eleventh All-Russian Olympiad on Turkish has been held at Saint Petersburg State University. It has been organised with the help of Moscow State University and the Russian-Turkish cultural center in Saint Petersburg. More than 500 students from eleven cities of Russia, including Moscow, Kazan, Ekaterinburg, Astrakhan and Saratov, took part in the Olympiad.
April 22-24, 2015 the regular International Conference on Source Studies and Historiography of Asian and African countries took place at the Faculty of Asian and African studies of Saint Petersburg State University. This year its motto was “Asia and Africa in the Changing World”.

The delegation from Harbin Institute of Technology (PRC) made a visit to St. Petersburg University. The delegation began with a tour of the Science Park of SPbU. The delegation pointed out that St. Petersburg University has unrivalled opportunities to study ecology owing to advanced resources centres. Harbin Institute of Technology put forward an initiative to establish a joint research centre for ecology and environmental conservation.
In keeping with the tradition of the biennials convened in 1990 – 2012 in Moscow and St. Petersburg, the International Conference on Languages of Far East, Southeast Asia and West Africa LESEWA-11 will be held on September,30 – October, 2, 2014, at the Faculty of Asian and African Studies (St.Petersburg). the Conference will focus on the remarkable far-reaching parallelism in syntactic and semantic structures of the languages of the Far East, Southeast Asia and West Africa, which can be explained neither by genealogical affinity, nor by aerial factors. Both individual language investigations and typological studies are encouraged. General phonetic and general linguistics themes are especially welcome.

The site of the Institute for Interdisciplinary Research of Korea at the Faculty of Asian and African Studies is currently working in test mode, but all sections and full functionality will be launched in the nearest future. The Institute for Interdisciplinary Research of Korea at the Faculty of Asian and African Studies aims to consolidate effort and bring in positive changes in Academic research and studying Korea at SPbSU, as well as to give opportunities to the students and teachers to get closer to Korea and feel the Spirit of Korean culture.

The 10th Olympiad was held in Moscow on January,24th, 2014. This year the best students studying Persian language at different universities all over the country took part in various contests testing their knowledge, reading, grammar and writing skills in Persian.
