The President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev has signed a decree on opening a branch of St Petersburg University in Tashkent. It will offer academic programmes in philology, biomedicine, regional studies, and economics.

Among the key areas will be training, retraining and advanced training of specialists of all levels, including university academics. Another focus is developing state-of-the-art academic programmes, introducing distance technologies in education, and creating electronic educational resources. Additionally, it will carry out innovative fundamental and applied research projects.

Instruction will be in the Russian language. It will offer the following programmes at the bachelor’s and master’s levels: Philology (Oriental languages); Regional Studies and Economics of Foreign Countries (East Countries); and Biomedicine (Chemistry, Biology, Physics, Psychology, and others). In the future, it will offer more programmes in a wider range of study areas. Graduates will receive a diploma from the University, which will be recognised as a document of higher education in the Republic of Uzbekistan.
