Kharitonova (St. Petersburg State University, St. Petersburg, a.kharitonova@spbu.ru ) REFORMS OF PETER THE GREAT AND MEIJI EMPERORS AS IDEOLOGICAL FACTOR OF NATIONAL LIBERATION MOVEMENT AT THE END OF THE XIXth AND THE BEGINNING OF THE XXth CENTURIES Abstract: The national liberation movement among patriotic elements of the Vietnamese society began to emerge at the turn of the XIX–XX centuries. At the initial stage to some extent it was influenced by the example of successful reforms carried out in Russia under Peter the Great and in Japan during the Meiji era. This successful experience was popularized in various areas of the life of Vietnamese society, including literature. It was used to arouse patriotic feelings in the country, to substantiate the idea of ​state modernization and to illustrate the possibility of reforms by the ruler within the country.
