The Origins of African Studies in Kazan Abstract: Kazan University has been one of the largest centers of Oriental studies in Russia since the beginning of the 19th century. In 1815, the Ethnographic Museum was founded at Kazan University with a rich African collection, which presents a variety of exhibits. In 2012, teaching of Swahili as an elective course began at Kazan University with the participation of Professor Nellie V. Gromova, Head of the Department of African Studies at IAAC MSU, she gave courses in Swahili and Introduction to African Studies. In 2014–15, first academic groups for the language and literature of Swahili and Afrikaans were opened. When choosing teaching methods, the teachers were guided by the experience of teachers from the IAAC of MSU, which laid the foundation for teaching African languages at Kazan University. African Studies in Kazan relies on both the Moscow School of African Studies and the St. Petersburg School. Kazan's own tradition of comparative study of African languages in conjunction with non-African languages is also preserved, i.e., the Swahili language was studied in conjunction with Arabic, and Afrikaans in conjunctionwithGerman. Several research trips of teachers and students at KazanUniversity to Tanzania and South Africa took place, during which, along with language practice, research was also carried out in interested scientific areas, and the necessary literature was acquired. Since 2020, Kazan Federal University has been regularly hosting the international scientific forum “Russia–Africa: Politics, Economics, History, Culture”, which brings together famous African researchers fromRussia and abroad.
